Christmas opening times 2023

As in previous years we are closed to all but essential services over the Christmas period. You can continue to use our online services to report, apply and pay, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout Christmas and New Year.

We reopen on Tuesday 2 January 2024.

  • Monday 25 December: CLOSED (Bank Holiday)
  • Tuesday 26 December: CLOSED (Bank Holiday)
  • Wednesday 27 December: CLOSED (council wide closure)
  • Thursday 28 December: CLOSED (council wide closure)
  • Friday 29 December: CLOSED (council wide closure)
  • Monday 1 January: CLOSED (Bank Holiday)

There will be changes in opening hours from the following services.

Births, deaths and marriages
  • Monday 25 December: CLOSED (Bank Holiday)
  • Tuesday 26 December: CLOSED (Bank Holiday)
  • Wednesday 27 December: CLOSED (open for pre-booked appointments only)
  • Thursday 28 December: CLOSED (open for pre-booked appointments only)
  • Friday 29 December: CLOSED (open for pre-booked appointments only)
  • Monday 1 January: CLOSED (Bank Holiday)
Bins and recycling

Bin collections

Bin collections due on Monday 25 December will take place on Saturday 23 December.

Bin collections due on Tuesday 26 December will take place on Sunday 24 December.

Bin collections due on Monday 1 January will take place on Saturday 30 December.

All other bin collections will take place as normal.

Blue bins

Small amounts of additional paper and card can be tied in a bundle and put next to blue bins for collection.

Black bins

Between Wednesday 27 December and Tuesday 23 January, up to 2 bags of extra general waste will be collected.

The extra non-recyclable waste should be put into a black bag, tied, and then put out for collection next to the black bin. 

Brown bins

Between Wednesday 27 December and Tuesday 23 January, extra tins, cans and plastic bottles can be placed inside a carrier bag, tied and then put out for collection next to the brown bin.

Glass bottles or jars must be placed inside brown bins, otherwise the extra recycling will not be collected.

Household Waste Recycling Centres

All Sheffield Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and will be open from 9:30am to 3pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. 

The HWRCs will be open from 9:30am to 3:30pm on all other days except for the following:

  • Blackstock Road: Gleadless, S14 1FY. Closed: Wednesday 27 December
  • Deepcar: Manchester Road, S36 2DT. Closed: Wednesday 27 and Wednesday 28 December
  • High Green: Greaves Lane, S35 4GR. Closed: Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 December

Community Helpline

During the holiday period, the Community Support Helpline is providing support on its open days for emergencies only (such as food shortages).

Pollution and nuisance

 

Our service is closed from 4pm on Friday 22 December and will re-open on Tuesday 2 January.

Roads and pavements

Amey’s Operational Control Room remains open 24 hours a day all year round. Report a problem as normal during the Christmas closure period.
