Local area SEND inspection in Sheffield

Local area SEND inspections are carried out by Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and cover education, health, and care.

Results of 2018 and 2022 inspections

Sheffield last had an inspection in November 2018. It found we had seven areas of significant weakness. Together with South Yorkshire’s Integrated Care Board (previously called the Clinical Commissioning Group), we developed an improvement plan called a 'written statement of action'.

Ofsted and the CQC carried out an inspection revisit in February 2022. They found:

  • we had made "sufficient progress" in six of the seven areas of weakness
  • we had not made "sufficient progress" to multi-agency transitions

How we're improving

In May 2022 we started an Accelerated Progress Plan (APP) to focus on improvements to multi-agency transitions across the local area. We completed the work in May 2023 and worked together as a SEND partnership. The Department for Education and NHS England monitored the plan. They found we had made accelerated progress in this area.

You can read more about SEND improvement below. This includes a briefing note on the Accelerated Progress Plan, the Plan itself, and the final outcome from the Department for Education.

Although we have made progress, we acknowledge more needs to be done. We will continue the pace of our SEND improvement work so more families have consistently positive experiences.
