We have a wide range of events taking place. Most of our events can be found online on Eventbrite.

Reading Groups for Adults

A reading group or book club is a gathering of people who meet to chat about a book they have read. They usually read one book a month, and many groups take the book out for free from a local library.  You do not have to be an expert, just willing to chat about what you have read.

Shared Reading

Shared Reading brings great books to life through reading aloud and group discussion. If you want to relax and listen to reading aloud and talk about what it means to you and others, come along.

Sharing Poetry 

Join fellow poetry lovers to share and discuss a range of poetry. It could be your own work, or someone else’s poem, or just sit back and enjoy the poetry with a cuppa.

Visually Impaired Reading Group 

Making use of our audiobook collections, the Central Library hosts a regular reading group for customers with a visual impairment. Refreshments provided.

Drop in and Draw

Relaxed group drawing sessions for adults. All ages and abilities welcome. Rather than a taught session, the emphasis will be on drawing for pleasure in a supportive, non-judgemental environment. The library will provide the subject, the space, and the materials. A great opportunity to slow down, see more clearly and enjoy some ‘me time’.

Writing Groups

Are you the next J K Rowling or Stephen King? Would you like to share your writing with others? Have a book inside you and want to be inspired to write? Build your confidence and formulate ideas for storylines and characters at this workshop for all – beginners or established writers.

Play Reading

Play reading is a wonderful way to exercise a love of theatre and literature, discover new plays and socialise with others. No previous experience is needed. We are open to anyone and everyone and you do not have to be an actor to join.

Tea and Words

A relaxed session in which poems are read aloud. Share thoughts and feelings, or simply sit back and enjoy listening. Everyone welcome and no pressure to contribute. Refreshments provided.

Death Café

At a Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea, and discuss death. Our objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.

Men’s Library Social Groups

Over 50 and love talking about sport? Whether it is cricket, rugby, football, boxing, snooker, or athletics, share your sporting memories with other sports fans over old photographs, newspaper articles and books.

At these friendly drop-in sessions, you will learn how to use a computer, improve your digital skills, and find support using the internet. Everyone welcome.

eLibrary and Library App – 1 to 1 Support

1 to 1 support setting up and using Libby, the eLibrary, and also the new Library app that allows you to manage your library account via your smartphone.

Deaf Social Group

The Central Library hosts a regular social group for people using sign language. A good opportunity to practice your signing skills. Refreshments provided.

Games Night in the Library

Whether you are a veteran gamer with a Gloomhaven campaign under your belt, or a newcomer to the hobby keen to discover something beyond Cluedo and Monopoly, feel free to join in. Adults of all ages are welcome to join us for an evening of laughter, strategy, and camaraderie.

Craft and Chat

Love to craft? Or interested in starting? We will be working on our projects, sharing progress, finished objects, wins and woes. Even if you do not feel like working on anything, feel free to come and have a natter in the company of like-minded people.
