How to dispose of household waste yourself
How to dispose of household waste yourself
You can help to prevent fly-tipping by disposing of your waste responsibly and legally. This includes items such as:
- fridges and freezers
- all kinds of electrical equipment, eg TVs and old computers
- clothing
- mattresses
- chairs
- garden waste
- carpets
Where to dispose of your waste
You should use your household bin collection service or take your waste to one of the five dedicated, free household waste recycling sites in Sheffield:
- Beighton Road, Woodhouse, Sheffield, S13 7PS
- Blackstock Road, Gleadless, Sheffield, S14 1FY
- Greaves Lane, High Green, Sheffield, S35 4GR
- Longley Avenue West, Shirecliffe, Sheffield, S5 8WA
- Manchester Road, Deepcar, S36 2UU
You can find out more about the sites and their opening times on the Veolia website.
Waste and scrap metal
If you need to dispose of waste or scrap metal, you should hire a scrap metal dealer to remove it. A scrap metal dealer must by law keep records, including the name and address of the previous owner of the metal.
Do not leave waste or scrap metal on the street, verge or edge of your property for anyone to take away. If you do this you won’t know who takes it, what they'll do with it, or whether they're legally allowed to transport it.
Recycling sites
Smaller recycling sites at supermarkets are not for the disposal of general household waste, they are for recycling purposes only. All recycling material should be placed in the correct containers.
You may be issued with a penalty notice if you leave waste or recycling material on the floor, at the side of or on top of the containers as this is considered to be fly-tipping.
