Gleadless Valley Masterplan

The regeneration work on Gleadless Valley will set out to provide change for the local community over the next 10 years and beyond. The project will look to improve housing, shared and greenspaces, and provide better services, facilities, employment and skills. Residents, tenants, businesses and partners will be at the centre of the project, making sure that the regeneration will provide the changes the community wants.

The Masterplan was officially signed off in September 2022, with the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team becoming fully operational in May 2023.

August 2024: Important Gleadless Valley Masterplan Update

The Gleadless Valley Masterplan Refresh and Delivery Plan was approved by the council's Strategy & Resource Committee, 29th August 2024. Both the committee paper and the meeting video are available to view.

You can find a summary of the new approach below.

Building work delayed due to rising costs

In recent years, rising costs have stalled our Masterplan projects. There are multiple factors that have contributed to this, including the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit, the Ukraine war and the cost-of-living crisis. We understand this is disappointing for Gleadless Valley and we sincerely apologise.

Over the past year, the Council's Gleadless Valley Regeneration team has been working hard to move forward with the Masterplan and you can see a list of their current projects below.

Working with partners and the community

Despite these challenges, we still want to improve homes, public spaces, shops and services, as well as boost local organisations and activities.

To do this, we plan to bring in housing associations and developers to build new housing, including more affordable housing. Collaborating with community groups and partners, we will seek funding for projects, such as park improvements. In this way we will be able to deliver far more than the council could on its own.

Investing in existing homes

This autumn we will be inspecting the condition of existing homes. These inspections and surveys will help us to spend funds on the homes that need the most help.

We have also formed a team to handle Gleadless Valley's housing repair backlog. They will work hard over the next three months to address all repair requests. You can log required repairs online here

Council commitment to Gleadless Valley

Sheffield City Council is dedicated to revitalising Gleadless Valley. We are forming a new board to include the Council Leader, local councillors, residents, community groups and partners. Together, they'll decide Gleadless Valley's strategy and ensure support for local people.

The Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team wants to assure people that the project will be delivered and are committed to engaging more with the community to achieve this.

We will keep you informed every step of the way. To stay updated, please join our Facebook group and sign up for our newsletter.

Current projects

You can see the projects we are currently working on or have worked on below:

• demolition of former SheffCare site at Paddock Hill and pending demolition of Castelayn to make way for affordable homes
• worked with planned repairs team to establish a task force to tackle all outstanding repairs in homes identified in the masterplan for potential demolition
• launch of schools ambassadors project and engagement with all local primary and secondary schools regarding the regeneration work
• redevelopment of Hemsworth Playing Fields. Charnock Women & Girls Football Club will use the site as their permanent home (alongside other clubs, including Sheffield United)
• establishment of Community Hubs at Callow Place and Gaunt Shopping Precinct for residents’ queries regarding the Masterplan
• consultation and progression towards delivery of Spotswood Green Space with a focus on outdoor play for young people
• arranged installation of a peregrine falcon nesting box. Peregrine falcons are natural predators and the aim is to naturally reduce the number of pigeons in residential areas
• improvements to Newfield Green and Gaunt Shopping Precincts funded through the Economic Recovery Fund, a grant fund to support local high streets

June 2024: Key Project Updates

Demolition of Paddock Hill and Castelayn

The Council received external funding to demolish Paddock Hill Care Home (Gleadless Road) and Castelayn Residential Home (Leighton Drive). These unused former care homes, called 'brownfield sites', will be replaced with affordable housing.

Paddock Hill was demolished April 2024 and Castelayn is due to be demolished late July/early August 2024.

The funding for demolition comes from the Brownfield Land Release Fund 2 by One Public Estate (OPE). This was not originally included in the Gleadless Valley Masterplan but provides an opportunity for more affordable homes to be built on the estate.

Spotswood Green Space

A big thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the Spotswood Green Space designs. We received 69 responses, with nearly 60% in favour of the proposed designs. Your engagement and support are crucial as we strive to create spaces that meet the community's needs and preferences.

One of the main concerns raised was around anti-social behaviour. We are committed to addressing this issue and ensuring your concerns are heard. Using your feedback, we are making improvements to the designs to enhance safety and usability. Once the amended designs are complete, we will share them with you. Thank you for your continued participation in making Gleadless Valley a better place for everyone.

Hemsworth and Herdings Football Pitches

Exciting news for Charnock Ridgeway Women and Girls Football Club. The club has been selected to play their future matches at Herdings Park and Hemsworth Playing Fields. We are thrilled to see the opportunities that will flourish as these sites become their new home grounds. Having football right on their doorsteps will undoubtedly nurture budding talent in the community. Follow them on Facebook to stay updated on their journey.

Young People in the Community

Young people's voices matter in this project and we want to help them understand what regeneration means for Gleadless Valley. A big thank you to Anns Grove Primary School, Bankwood Community School, Springs Academy, Newfield Secondary School, and Woodlands Primary School for their participation in the project so far. So far, we have engaged with:

  • 1,800 young people in assemblies
  • 80+ parents and carers in coffee mornings/parents evening
  • 180 young people in classes
  • and have recruited some incredible Student Ambassadors who represent their peers

Project Timeline

June 2024

Economic Recovery Fund: Exciting news for Newfield Green and Gaunt Shopping Centres! Both areas are set to benefit from the Economic Recovery Fund (ERF), a grant supporting improvements to local high streets. This initiative encourages residents and visitors to spend time and shop in these areas. Guided by local businesses, the plan aims to revitalise these shopping hubs by boosting local businesses and improving infrastructure. It’s a significant step toward a brighter future for the community, and we look forward to seeing these positive changes unfold.

May 2024

Hemsworth and Herdings football pitches: In May, Charnock Ridgeway Women & Girls FC successfully completed the application stage to use the Hemsworth and Herdings football pitches moving forward.

April 2024

Spotswood Green Space: A big thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the Spotswood Green Space designs. We received 69 responses, with nearly 60% in favour of the proposed designs. Your engagement is crucial as we strive to create spaces that meet community needs. One of the main concerns raised was about anti-social behaviour, and we are committed to addressing this issue. February 2024

Paddock Hill and Castelayn demolition: Thanks to the Brownfield Land Release Fund 2, administered by One Public Estate (OPE), Paddock Hill has been successfully demolished. Contractors are scheduled to begin work on Castelayn on July 15. Before this demolition, we will encourage several bats present in the building to roost in an alternative location. Due to a lack of trees in the nearby area, we will install bat boxes on the outside of the flats at Leighton Drive. This work will occur at the end of July or beginning of August and will cause minimal short-term disruption without affecting residents in the long term. The demolition of Castelayn care home is also scheduled for the end of July or beginning of August. After demolition, debris will be cleared, and grass will be sown on the site. We are currently exploring options for affordable housing to be built on the land and will keep you updated on next steps.

November 2023 to January 2024

From November 2023 to January 2024, the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team collaborated closely with partners throughout the area to develop a comprehensive waste management strategy. In addition, the team engaged with local schools by delivering assemblies and training Student Regeneration Ambassadors, fostering youth engagement in non-educational settings to ensure the project reflects the perspectives of young people. During this period, the Gaunt Community Hub opened in the shopping precincts, providing a vital platform for community involvement in the regeneration efforts.

July to October 2023

Communication and Engagement Plan: From July to October, we developed our Communication and Engagement Plan, which outlines our goals and principles for interacting with the community, members, MPs, and stakeholders. We shared this plan with our partners to gather their input and made updates based on their feedback. A copy of the plan can be found under Supporting Documents.

June 2023

In June, the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team began building connections with local community groups to better understand their activities in the Valley and explore ways to collaborate for improvement. During this month, we also released our first newsletter. Additionally, the team worked with the South Area Team to reopen the Gleadless Valley Community Hub in the community room at Callow Place.

October 2022 to May 2023

Between October 2022 and May 2023, recruitment for the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team took place, culminating in the full team being established by May. A governance structure was also set up, consisting of the Gleadless Valley Delivery Board and the Member Steering Group, to provide oversight and ensure that the masterplan's objectives are being effectively targeted and delivered.

April to September 2022

From April to September 2022, the masterplan received approval at a Co-op Executive Meeting and was published in September.

January to March 2022

During this period, we conducted the final consultation on the draft masterplan with the public.

2017 to 2022

From 2017 to 2022, the Gleadless Valley Masterplan Team held design workshops, consultations, and events to gather resident feedback on their preferences for Gleadless Valley. This input was instrumental in developing the Draft Gleadless Valley Masterplan.
