Sheffield war memorials

War memorials are a familiar sight on the landscape of Sheffield. They provide a remembrance monument to the people who lost their lives through the conflicts of war. 

As a council we have a responsibility and commitment to preserve and maintain all the war memorials throughout Sheffield.

Centre

Cenotaph War Memorial

Barker's Pool, Sheffield, S1 2HB. In centre of public space between City Hall and John Lewis.

Tall flagpole mounted on bronze monument - the focal point for Remembrance Day commemorations.

York and Lancaster War Memorial

Weston Park, Western Bank, Sheffield, S10 2TJ. On main path alongside Western Bank. Access via main gate to park opposite Childrens Hospital.

The Boer War Memorial and the First and Second World War Memorial are located here. The bronze triptych is dedicated to the fallen of the South African (Boer) War. The memorials are on opposite sides of the monument.

A third memorial in the form of a plaque and an oak tree, some 6 yards to the south of the main memorial, is dedicated to 2/3 West Riding Field Ambulance, 1914/1918.

Sheffield War Memorials in Europe

Sheffield Battalion Memorial in Serre

Village of Serre in France is 5 miles north of Albert.

Following the war, Serre was adopted by the City of Sheffield and it was decided to erect a monument to the men of the City Battalion on the main street where some of their bodies had been found long after the battle had ended.
