Apply for a grant for a cleaner vehicle you've already bought

This financial support scheme has now closed.  You can no longer make an application.

The grant scheme providing financial support to eligible residents and businesses who replaced a polluting vehicle with a low emissions vehicle after 26 October 2021 closed to new applicants on Friday 14 July 2023.

Eligibility

To apply for a grant, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • have a UK bank account
  • live or have a business registered in Sheffield or Rotherham
  • have sold a polluting vehicle and purchased a compliant vehicle
  • be able to provide evidence of the purchase of compliant vehicle and sale of non compliant vehicle
  • meet all the criteria for both your old and new vehicle types

New vehicle eligibility

  • you won't have to pay to drive your vehicle in the clean air zone
  • you purchased it after 26 October 2021 but before applications open for the scheme
  • you can evidence you have purchased it within four weeks (before or after) the sale of the non-compliant vehicle
  • you can evidence you are the owner / registered keeper
  • you agree to retain ownership of the new vehicle for a minimum of two years after purchase
  • you purchased it through a dealership as part of a part exchange or purchased it privately. You should be able to provide evidence to demonstrate date of sale, price and payment to a third party through an invoice, purchase order, receipt and bank statement

If your vehicle is a taxi, it must be licensed with Sheffield or Rotherham Council. 

Old vehicle eligibility

  • you would have had to pay to drive the old vehicle in the clean air zone
  • you have sold the old vehicle or part exchanged it for the new compliant vehicle within four weeks (before or after) the purchase of the new vehicle
  • you can evidence you were the owner / registered keeper at the point of sale
  • you have owned the vehicle for 12 months prior to sale
  • you part exchanged it for a compliant vehicle or sold it privately. Evidence will be required in the form of a invoice or receipt with details of the transaction and both parties involved, together with a bank statement that can link directly to the transaction

Old vehicle eligibility - taxis only

There are further options available for taxis, in addition to those shown above. For example, you have the option to transfer vehicle ownership or retain the old vehicle as a private car.



Where a compliant taxi has been purchased and the old vehicle ownership transferred:

  • the vehicle log book (V5) must be provided and a HPICAP check will be undertaken by the Council
  • the vehicle must have been licensed with Sheffield or Rotherham Council no more than 14 days prior to point of ownership transfer

Where a compliant taxi has been purchased and the old vehicle retained:

  • you would have had to pay to drive the old vehicle in the clean air zone
  • you can evidence you are the owner / registered keeper and have owned it for at least 12 months
  • you must have a valid MOT / Vehicle Compliance Certificate at the time the new vehicle was purchased 
  • the vehicle must be de-licensed with Sheffield or Rotherham Council prior to grant payment

Vehicle type eligibility

Coach

You must:

  • have a business registered in Sheffield or Rotherham
  • have entered the clean air zone at least twice a week over the last 12 months

Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV)

  • have a valid Vehicle Operator Licence at an operator depot in Sheffield or within 5km of the clean air zone

Taxi (Hackney Carriage / Private Hire up to 8 seats)

  • have a business registered in Sheffield or Rotherham

Van or other Light Goods Vehicle (LGV), Motorhome, Campervan, Minibus

  • have a business registered in Sheffield or Rotherham
  • have entered the clean air zone at least twice a week over the last 12 months

If you are a Sheffield or Rotherham vehicle licence holder whose business is registered outside of Sheffield or Rotherham, please contact the team directly.

How much you could get

Number of vehicles you can apply for

  • 3 vehicles per business/resident
  • one vehicle per application
  • applications can be submitted across multiple vehicle types
  • vehicles can only be used once per grant application

Exclusions: who can't apply for financial support

  • businesses registered outside of Sheffield and Rotherham (except HGV depots and SCC and RMBC taxi licence holders)
  • residents outside of Sheffield and Rotherham
  • vehicles types not listed
  • vehicles that have already received support from another clean air zone scheme
  • businesses that are in administration, insolvent or where a striking off notice has been issued
  • businesses with over 250 employees (HGVs only)
  • businesses that have already received grant payments that equal the maximum subsidy control allowance
  • the Council reserves the right to reject applications where they consider insufficient evidence of the financial transaction has been provided
Subsidy allowance

By applying for a grant/subsidised loan under the Sheffield CAZ scheme you are applying for aid that may fall under Subsidy Control. The Council has registered a Subsidy Control scheme which you can review. 

By submitting an application, and upon confirmation of a grant award, you are confirming that you have satisfied yourself that the grant is accordance with the Subsidy Control Regulations.
