Northumberland Road Conservation Area

,Northumberland Road Conservation Area is located in a suburb of Sheffield about 1km south west of the City Centre.

The Conservation Area has a wholly urban setting, locked between Whitham Road, Western Bank and Glossop Road, major routes into the City Centre.

The special interest that justifies the designation of the Northumberland Road Conservation Area comes from the following features:

  • a mix of 19th Century residential buildings in Gothic and Classical styles, 9 of which are listed.
  • the West End Hotel dating to 1903, an Edwardian building with prominent location overlooking busy cross roads
  • mature deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs and boundary hedges
  • historic floors including natural stone kerbs and paving setts
  • stone boundary walls, decorative gate piers and railings

Date of designation

The conservation area was originally designated on 2 December 1981.

Conservation Area Appraisal

In our duty to periodically review historic areas and to publish proposals for their future preservation and enhancement, we have undertaken an Appraisal in the area.

Following a period of public consultation, a report went to Cabinet on 21 March 2012 for adoption.
