How to apply for a school in Sheffield

Overview

Our Admission Team co-ordinates the application and allocation process on behalf of Sheffield Schools.

Applications for school places will take place at the normal year of entry or in year.

Normal year of entry:

  • Primary School (starting in Reception/FS2 for the first time)
  • Transfer from separate Infant to separate Junior School (Y2 to Y3)
  • Secondary School (transferring from primary to secondary school, starting in year 7)
  • Sixth Form

In-year applications

You can make an application outside of the normal year of entry. This is an in-year application and will be the case if you're:

  • new or returning to Sheffield
  • applying for a transfer from one school in Sheffield to another

Educating your child outside of their normal age group

You can ask for your child to be educated with a different age group. This could be because they are talented or have experienced problems, such as ill health.

If your child already attends school, you should ask the Headteacher about this.

If your child is not yet on a school roll yet, your application will be considered for your child’s chronological year group. Once on roll, you can discuss this with their headteacher.

Delaying your child's admission to school

If you're applying for your child to start school for the first time, such as entering Reception, you can request to delay their admission into school.

Our school admission arrangements: 2026 to 2027 academic year

We're responsible for determining admission arrangements for all Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools.

Admission arrangements for the 2026 to 2027 academic year were determined by the Education, Children and Families Committee on 4 February 2025.

Objections to admission arrangements must be referred to GOV.UK: Office of the Schools Adjudicator by Thursday 15 May 2025.
