Find out about bin charges

A £33 charge is made for each bin, to cover the administration and delivery costs associated with providing:

  • a black bin, brown bin and blue bin to a new property
  • a replacement black bin
  • new and replacement green bins
  • for new and replacement large bins provided to large households the charge is £46

Replacement brown and blue recycling bins are provided free of charge.

These charges have been introduced because we no longer have the resource to provide bins free of charge.

The decision to introduce charges for new and replacement black bins and green bins (garden waste) was taken at our Cabinet meeting on 18 January 2017.

The decision to introduce charges for providing a blue bin and brown bin to new properties was taken at our Cabinet meeting on 17 April 2019.

Providing your own bin

If you choose to provide your own black bin from another supplier, you will own the bin. However, in order for us to empty your bin you will need to have agreed to our terms and conditions which mean you will be responsible for replacing your bin, should it become lost or damaged. The bin you provide must meet a certain specification to make sure it is safe to empty.

If you choose not to pay for a bin or provide one from an alternative supplier, we will not be able to provide you with a waste collection service. You will need to make alternative arrangements with a licensed waste collection provider. You have a Duty of Care to ensure your waste is collected and disposed of correctly, and failure to do so can lead to a fine and/or a criminal prosecution.

Reduce the risk of your bin going missing or being damaged

We recognise that if your bin has been stolen/set on fire it is not your fault, but we no longer have the resources to replace bins for free.

The following hints and tips will reduce the risk of your bin going missing/being damaged:

  • don't leave your bin on the highway/pavement - store it on your property and put it out for collection just before 7am. Take your bin back onto your property as soon as possible after collection
  • put your house number on your bin
  • don't overfill your bin. Your bin is designed to carry waste and if used correctly will be good for a number of years. If it is too heavy, the likelihood of damage and a short lifespan will increase
