Family history

Research your family tree (genealogy)

We provide a range of resources, materials and advice for those researching their family history.

We hold documents and records relating to ancestors that may have served in World War One, local Parish records from 1538, birth, marriage and death records, trade directories 1774-1974, workhouse registers 1838-1930, census returns 1841-1911 and more.

You can search for individual ancestors in many of our archives on Find My Past. There is free access to Find My Past, as well as Ancestry and the British Newspaper Archive (BNA) in all of our libraries. Contact your local library to book a computer session.

The wide range of materials available can help you to build up and complete your family history and learn more about your roots and the changing dynamics of your family over the years.

Our knowledgeable staff are available to assist you if need help using the archives for your research.
