Police Force records

Records of a number of local police forces. The records include information on police officers (such as appointments, promotions, discipline, resignations), criminals (such as charge books, lists of prisoners etc) as well as the administration of the force such as premises matters, liaison with the Home Office, statistics etc. We have records from mid 19th century to present day.

Location

Sheffield Archives, though printed annual and other reports may also be available at Sheffield Local Studies Library.

Order before you visit

Not all archive material is stored onsite and we may require notice of the items you wish to see. Please contact us to confirm when we can retrieve items for you.

Please note however that access to some records may be restricted under the Data Protection Act and may also be subject to exemptions from the Freedom of Information Act.

This particularly applies to records less than 100 years old. Please contact us for further details.

Copies

We can normally supply copies for private study purposes, subject to the usual copyright regulations.
