We have reduced the speed limit to 20mph in some residential areas. The benefits of lower speeds are:
- safer, more pleasant places for people to live (especially for our children and elderly residents)
- reduced likelihood of accidents
- if you are involved in a collision or hit by a car at 20mph you are far less likely to be seriously injured than if hit by a car travelling at 30mph
- people are more likely to cycle and walk
About the 20mph areas
The entrance to the area will be clearly signed. There will also be small signs mounted on lamp posts to remind you.
The work will be funded by transport project funding provided by the Government. There will be no traffic calming measures such as road humps, as we don't have funding for these.
New 20mph areas and how to comment on them
We decide where future 20mph schemes could go by looking at local accident reports and also whether the work can happen at the same time as the Streets Ahead road development programme.

City Centre
We have introduced a ‘sign only’ 20mph speed limit in the city centre.
A maximum 20mph speed will help to make the city centre a more attractive place to visit and help regeneration of the area. It has both residential, commercial and retail areas with a lot of pedestrians and cyclists, who should feel safer from the risk of vehicle collisions.
