Doula volunteers provide practical and emotional support to expectant mothers through the latter stages of pregnancy, through labour and for the first 6 weeks of family life. Training sessions run twice a year.

January 2018 session

Please come along to our Doula Information Session on Wednesday 10 January at 10am in the Level 2 Conference Suite at Moorfoot. There's no need to book, just report to reception when you arrive.

What to expect

As a volunteer doula you will carry out weekly visits to an expectant woman who has been referred into the project for the last 6 weeks of pregnancy, support through labour and birth and continue weekly visits until baby is 6 weeks old.

You will offer emotional support and be on call around the time of the birth.

Being trained in infant feeding, you will help her gain confidence by discussing the benefits of breastfeeding, skin to skin contact and much more.

As part of your contact you can also:

  • accompany to appointments if appropriate
  • help to complete a birth plan discussing options and giving information to empower the mum to be to make informed choices. Further to completing this she may discuss her wishes for the birth and it may help alleviate any fears she might have
  • help her pack her hospital bags
  • research specific information she may be interested in
