Due to Covid-19 our volunteer Doulas are only able to provide support over the phone or at Covid secure family centres. In some cases support during established labour and birth at hospital is allowed. We aim to resume face to face visits in women's homes as soon as it is safe to do so.
Volunteer Doulas provide practical and emotional support to expectant mothers through the latter stages of pregnancy, through labour and for the first 6 weeks of family life. Training sessions run twice a year.
What to expect
As a volunteer Doula you will offer weekly contact to an expectant woman who has been referred into the programme for the last 6 weeks of pregnancy, support through labour and birth if required and continue weekly visits until baby is 6 weeks old.
You will offer emotional and practical support and be on call around the time of the birth.
Being trained in infant feeding, you will help her gain confidence by discussing the benefits of breastfeeding, skin to skin contact and much more.
As part of your contact you can also:
- accompany to appointments if appropriate
- help her to complete a birth plan
- help her pack her hospital bags
- empower mum to make informed choices
Due to the Covid restrictions we’re currently unable to deliver training; new dates will be made available as soon as they are agreed.
