South Yorkshire Research Framework for the Historic Environment

The South Yorkshire Historic Environment Research Framework is a resource that helps us understand what we know about the Historic Environment of South Yorkshire and to set out priorities for further investigation.

Why we did this project

All archaeological work should be research-driven. In order to maximise the potential information gained from research or fieldwork, it is important to set out relevant research questions through the project design. For example, what sort of features or finds do we expect the site to contain? What do we want to know about these? With this in mind, how can we design our project to effectively gather meaningful data?

The framework helps us to answer these questions, as well as providing an overview of the local archaeology for each period.

You can explore the Research Framework online.
