Open Space Strategy

Together with our many partners, we have developed ‘Sheffield’s Great Outdoors’, an ambitious long-term strategy for the future use and management of the city's green and open spaces.

Our strategy will ensure that every area of the city has green and open spaces of exceptional quality for all current and future generations to use and enjoy.

Sheffield's great outdoors

Sheffield has more public parks, green spaces and tree cover than most European cities.

Our green and open spaces are public spaces such as our parks, play areas, gardens, community farms, allotments and the spaces outside our homes.

Big or small, they are spaces for us to use, have fun in and enjoy. They are also places that improve our environment and quality of life.

Sheffield has a unique green and open space legacy with world-class potential. You have already told us that you value these spaces and want to see them improved.

The strategy outlines a 20 year plan to meet local people’s needs in relation to Sheffield’s outdoor spaces, to deliver environmental benefits and to raise the quality of green and open spaces throughout the city.

Reaping the benefits

The focus of the strategy is on the wide range of benefits and opportunities that green and open spaces provide and is centred around 4 key themes:

  • People
  • Places
  • Environment & Sustainability
  • Quality Management

Within each of these themes are a number of topics we believe we need to take action on.
