You can report an abandoned vehicle to us. Where possible, please give us your contact details and as many details as possible about the vehicle, including how long it has been there.
We cannot consider a vehicle abandoned just because it is not displaying a valid tax disc.
Reclaiming a vehicle
All abandoned vehicles will be removed to a compound. If the vehicle carries a Great Britain number plate, we will send a written notice to the registered owner.
Owners can recover their vehicle by providing identification of ownership and paying us removal and storage costs.
Vehicles must be reclaimed within 7 days of the notice, after which it will be disposed of.
Abandoning a vehicle is a criminal offence which can carry a maximum fine of £2,500 and/or 3 months’ imprisonment.
It is an offence to use or keep an untaxed vehicle on a public road. The maximum fine is £1,000 or 5 times the annual rate of duty for the vehicle, whichever is greater.
Untaxed vehicles are removed by the DVLA’s national removal contractor to a secure compound in Sheffield.
You can report an untaxed vehicle to GOV.UK.
