Cooling tower registration

Any premises using a cooling tower or evaporative condenser within the city boundary must be registered with us.

This register is essential in helping us, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Public Health England (PHE) to quickly trace the possible source of a Legionnaires’ disease cluster or outbreak and to take rapid action to protect the public.

For further information to the law relating to Cooling Towers please read The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992.

Who should apply to register

You need to register if your commercial site uses a cooling tower or evaporative condenser.

You do not need to register if your cooling tower or condenser:

  • contains no water that’s exposed to air
  • water supply is not connected
  • electrical supply is not connected

It is free to register.

If available you should provide a site map of your premises showing the location of the registered cooling towers and/or evaporative condensers.
