Eligibility and how to bid

Search, choose and bid for homes online.

Once you're accepted onto the Housing Register, you'll get access to your own account on the Sheffield Property Shop website. You can use your Sheffield Property Shop account to search for available homes and place bids on the properties you're eligible for.

Choosing a property

Sheffield uses a Choice Based Lettings system. This means you view advertised properties and choose which ones you want to be considered for.

  • you can bid for up to three properties each week
  • bids are free and just shows your interest, you won’t need to pay anything

All available Council and housing association homes are listed weekly on the Sheffield Property Shop website.

Each property advert includes:

  • the reference number (needed to place your bid)
  • eligibility criteria based on things like age, household size or need

Some housing associations have different criteria to Sheffield City Council. These are clearly marked in the advert.

How to place a bid

  • log in to your Sheffield Property Shop account
  • browse the properties you are eligible for – which will be on your ‘my account’ page
  • you can select up to three properties each cycle

You’ll be able to see your current bid position, which may change depending on how many others bid and what bands they’re in.

If you bid for a property that you aren’t eligible for, your bid will not count and you may not be able to bid on anything else that week. Always check before bidding.

A short video showing how to place bids is available on the Sheffield Property Shop website.

Bidding times

Properties are added to the Sheffield Property Shop every week. The bidding cycle runs:

  • from Thursday at 12:01am
  • to Tuesday at 11:59pm

You can bid at any time during the cycle, which excludes Wednesdays. The time you bid won’t affect your chances, unless the property is marked as First Come First Served.
