Independent living with technology

Sometimes called ‘technology enabled care’, these are gadgets and devices that can help you stay safe and independent.

How can technology help?

From personal alarms and fall detectors to medication reminders and smart sensors, technology can make daily life easier and safer. It’s especially useful if you live alone, have health needs, or support someone else. It can:

  • monitor your wellbeing and alert someone if you need help
  • remind you about important tasks, like taking medication
  • help you manage day-to-day activities so you can live more independently

Types of technology

Computer software and apps

These can help with reminders to take medication, track wellbeing or complete daily tasks. Some also allow carers or family members to stay updated.

SMART gadgets

Talking clocks, voice-activated lights, smart plugs and remote-controlled heating systems can make your home more accessible and easier to manage.

Monitoring systems

These include fall detectors, door sensors, or medication alerts that can notify a carer, friend or family member if something goes wrong.
