Three parties to lead Sheffield City Council for third year

Sheffield City Council’s administration for 2025/2026 will be formed of a collaboration between Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party for a third year running.

It was also approved today (Monday 19th May) at the Annual General Meeting that Cllr Tom Hunt will continue as Leader of the Council for the third year, and Cllr Fran Belbin will be Deputy Leader, both from the Labour Party.

The Liberal Democrat party will be led into the new year by their new Leader, Cllr Martin Smith, while Cllr Angela Argenzio will do the same as the new Leader of the Green Party.

The Council is made up of nine policy committees and the chairs for all of these were also confirmed today.

All the Council’s political groups are represented on committees in proportion to the numbers of councillors from each party elected in last May’s 2024 Local Elections. This is because this year was a fallow election year for Sheffield City Council.

Labour will continue to chair four committees, the Liberal Democrats three, and the Green Party two committees.

It is a huge honour to be re-elected to lead Sheffield City Council. Our administration will always put the people of Sheffield first and we will work together to give our city a better, brighter future.

We will work hard to build the new homes we need, improve our public transport, and ensure that every young person has the opportunity to succeed. We have a shared commitment to bring in investment, create new jobs, improve our services and make Sheffield cleaner, greener and safer.

Council Leader and Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Tom Hunt

We will continue to work collaboratively, as we have for the past two years, to deliver much-needed services for the people of Sheffield.

By working together we are able to unlock opportunities for every generation in our city, whether that’s bringing critical investment, changes to our transport, development of our cultural offering or support for our local communities.

Cllr Martin Smith, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group

For the past few years, we have shown how political parties can come together and work for the benefit of Sheffield.

The Green Group has played a big role in that work, and as the new party leader for Sheffield I look forward to helping continue that work over the coming year.

Tackling the ongoing Climate and Nature Emergencies, and making the housing and transport options greener are among the priorities for all of us to continue bringing a bright future for Sheffield.

Cllr Angela Argenzio, Leader of the Green Group
