Tenants celebrated for their green gardening talents

The best Council property gardens across the city were celebrated last week in a ceremony at the city centre Winter Garden.

The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Safiya Saeed, and Sheffield City Council’s Director of Housing James Clark were present to meet the winners and runners up and find out about the incredible gardens they have nurtured at their homes.

Refreshments were then served at Sheffield Town Hall.

The five best entries in each category were invited to the event, where the winners and runners up received their prizes.

The categories were:

Best garden:

  • Winner – Emma and Tony
  • Runner up – Jason, S5

Small space:

  • Winner – Adam, S6
  • Runner up – Charmian, S8

People’s choice:

  • Special award - Dolly, S14

Special recognition:

  • Cheryl – S2

In total, 47 gardens entered and were judged by the Housing Service.

“The aim of the competition was to encourage as many Council tenants to enter as possible.

“It was about celebrating those who take pride in their spaces, and perhaps get their friends, family, neighbours and even the community involved in nourishing these spaces for everyone to enjoy.

“Every green space is important – every one of them was a worthy entrant. I was lucky enough to visit some of these and show the amazing work being done to share the love of gardening with others. Gardening is great for both physical and mental wellbeing.”
