‘Sheffield Inn’ pops up in German city in celebration of 75-year relationship

Sheffield and the city of Bochum in Germany have been twinned for 75 years, this year.

In celebration of this, and to inform residents of the history of the twinning, Bochum brought Sheffield into its own city centre.

A space known as the ‘Sheffield Inn’ was unveiled in the city last month. The pop-up venue showcased information about Sheffield and the 75-year relationship it has shared with Bochum.

In the space, artwork showcasing iconic and notable Sheffield buildings, such as the world-famous Crucible Theatre, the historic Sheffield City Hall and the impressive Winter Garden, were displayed.

Historical information about Sheffield and the twinning agreement were shown, as well as a display case with exhibits from 75 years of friendship.

Sheffield’s Lord Mayor, Cllr Safiya Saeed, visited the German city, and the pop-up shop, over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

It truly is remarkable to see what you have done with the space and is a wonderful showcase of our enduring friendship and connection.

Our journey together began in 1950, when the twinning arrangement between Sheffield and Bochum was born.

Both Sheffield and Bochum share a rich industrial heritage, having grown to prominence through the development of our coal and steel industries. This common ground laid the foundation for a strong and meaningful partnership. Over the years, we have exchanged official greetings, hosted regular visits from delegations, and engaged in numerous cultural, educational, and economic exchanges.

Let us celebrate this milestone with joy and optimism, as we look forward to a future filled with shared achievements and lasting bonds.
