The plaque will recognise those who campaigned for a tree strategy to help ensure that Sheffield’s trees would be managed sustainably, and who saved thousands of street trees from destruction.
In May 2023, Sheffield City Council committed to fund and commission a plaque. This is to acknowledge the significance of the Street Trees Campaign and the wrongs committed by the Council in Sheffield between 2012 and 2018.
The Council motion said, ‘It will serve to recognise those who fought for our environmental heritage and were vindicated.’
Once complete, the plaque will be located in the front lobby of Sheffield Town Hall where other commemorative plaques are sited.
In 2024, an independent task and finish group was established to complete the work to commission the plaque. The group is made up of campaigners, residents, academics and a Council representative.
The Group has now launched a procurement process to secure an artist to design the plaque, that will be cast in bronze and incorporate text and images that call to mind the efforts and achievements of tree campaigners.
Once an artist has been selected, their final design including wording developed by the group will be shared with the Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee later this year.
If you’re interested in designing the plaque, please apply on the Council website.
Applications close on 10 July 2025.
