Sheffield City Council has announced the redevelopment of both Springs and Concord Leisure Centres, making them the first facilities to be rebuilt under the city’s Sport and Leisure Strategy.
The investment of the city’s leisure provision aims to create modern, welcoming, and accessible spaces for all.
The new facilities at Springs and Concord will include upgraded amenities designed to support fitness, wellness, and community engagement.
The developments, set to begin in late 2026, will ensure that Sheffield residents have access to high-quality leisure services for years to come.
"This is a significant investment in the health and wellbeing of our residents. The new leisure centres will ensure that everyone, regardless of ability or background, has access to top-quality fitness and wellbeing facilities.
“We are committed to making Sheffield a healthier, more active city, and these redevelopments are a major step forward."
Cllr Kurtis Crossland, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council
In January, award-winning leisure operator, Everyone Active took over operation of both leisure centres, along with eight other facilities in the city, including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, the English Institute of Sport Sheffield and iceSheffield.
“This fantastic redevelopment project is hugely exciting for Sheffield and will ensure more state-of-the-art leisure facilities are available to local communities.
“The investment will help us to better support the health and wellbeing of residents through amazing activities and services and we look forward to working with the Council to bring this vision to life.”
Lorenzo Clark, Partnership Manager at Everyone Active
A vision for health and inclusivity
The redevelopment aims to transform Springs and Concord Leisure Centres into vibrant hubs that not only support physical activity but also integrate healthcare and community services under one roof.
Rather than refurbishing the aging facilities, rebuilding Springs and Concord Leisure Centres has been identified as the most cost-effective and future-proofed solution. By constructing the new centres on adjacent land, the current facilities will remain operational throughout the build, ensuring minimal disruption for users.
Residents can look forward to enhanced facilities, including:
- State-of-the-art health and fitness gyms
- Six-lane, 25m main swimming pools and teaching pools
- Five-court sports hall (Springs)
- Ten-court sports hall (Concord)
Wellbeing spas and health suites - Multiple studio spaces for group fitness classes
- Soft play facilities for families
- Modern cafés and social spaces
Wet and dry changing facilities - Ample parking, including accessible spaces and cycle parking
Other amenities are still being considered too, including new indoor bowls hall at Springs Leisure Centre and co-location spaces in both facilities, which will provide services such as locally based NHS provision, healthy weight support, smoking cessation programmes and physical rehab.
At Concord Sports Centre, this will include re-providing the existing co-located healthcare facility within the main building to bring the health and physical activity offers together.

Community involvement
The plans for the new centres have been developed through extensive research, facility assessments, and feedback from local residents and stakeholders.
A city-wide consultation was launched in March 2025 and is providing a range of opportunities for the public to share their thoughts, including:
- Drop ins and displays at both leisure centres
- Attendance at local community venues and events
- Online surveys for both leisure centres
- Targeted consultation to improve accessibility and inclusivity
