Public consultation launches into latest Sheffield Local Plan proposals

Residents across Sheffield can have their say on the latest proposals for the Local Plan as the public consultation opens.

Those wishing to take part have six weeks to submit their feedback about the plan. This feedback will then be sent to independent Government Inspectors who will review and assess the responses once the consultation closes on Friday 11th July.

The consultation is the latest step in Sheffield City Council’s Local Plan process and comes after a meeting of the Full Council earlier in May approved a measure that would see a small section of the city’s Green Belt released for development.

Following a review by independent Government Inspectors back in 2024, it was recommended to the Council that a further 3,259 homes and 52.8 hectares of employment land be added to the proposed plan to meet an overall need for 38,012 homes and 237.2 hectares of employment land. The proposals will boost the delivery of affordable housing and help create tens of thousands of new jobs. The Council reviewed all the available brownfield sites and found that all possible development had been accounted for already. As a result, a small section of Green Belt land has had to be considered.

In all, 14 Green Belt sites have been proposed to be included, totalling 3.6% of Sheffield’s total Green Belt land, meaning over 96% would remain untouched and protected.

How can I get involved?

The public consultation into the latest proposals launched on Thursday 29th May and will run for six weeks, finishing on Friday 11th July. Anybody can contribute and give their opinions on the plan with all responses going to the independent Government Inspectors and not being assessed or reviewed by Sheffield City Council.

Anyone seeking to propose changes to the plan and who have submitted a response during the consultation period will have a right to submit evidence and/or appear at the public hearings in the autumn.
