£10m available to make homes warmer and greener

The latest grants to make houses more efficient and cost-effective are now available – with £10m available for Sheffield homes.

Some £6.85m has been secured in the latest round of awards from two Government-backed initiatives – the Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme and the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund (Wave 3).

The funding covers the next three years until 2028, and with a further £3.45m of match funding from Sheffield City Council represents a £10.3m investment in this area.

The work will be carried under the Warm Homes Sheffield partnership. It will help households achieve an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C, making homes warmer, more energy-efficient and cheaper to heat. It will support both Council tenants and those in privately owned or privately rented homes.

Warm Homes: Local Grant

Sheffield City Council has been awarded £3.4 million to support improvements in approximately 220 privately owned and privately rented homes across Sheffield.

The Council will once again partner with E.ON, a leading name in energy efficiency, to carry out the work.

You may be eligible if:

  • You own or privately rent your home
  • Your property has an EPC rating of D–G

Eligibility also depends on if one of the following applies:

  • Your gross household income is £36,000 or less
  • You receive a means-tested benefit
  • You live in a priority postcode – E.ON can advise on if your postcode fits this category

Priority will be given to:

  • Households with children aged 16 and under, anyone aged 65 or above, or a person with a disability or long-term health condition
  • Households on lower incomes or, for owner-occupiers, with savings under £23,250

This scheme is fully funded, meaning no contribution is required from Council funds.

To find out more and apply, you can call E.ON on 0333 202 4820 from 8am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Or you can head to the E.ON website.

Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund

The Council has also secured £3.45m from the Social Housing Fund – and have matched that funding to create a £6.9m investment.

This will deliver energy upgrades to around 1,300 Council homes with EPC ratings of D or below. Again, it will help residents benefit from reduced energy bills and improved living conditions.

On this project, the Council has partnered with Wates, who have an excellent track record in delivering high-quality improvements for social housing.

This forms a key part of the Council’s commitment for all its housing stock to reach EPC rating C by 2030.

This is such welcome news. Amidst an ongoing cost of living crisis, help for residents to keep their household costs down will, I am sure, be greatly appreciated.

It can only be good for the environment if people are able to upgrade their homes to modern, more efficient standards of insulation and heating.

This significant investment represents a major step in helping Sheffield households reduce their energy costs, stay healthy and warm in winter, and lower carbon emissions across the city.
