Meet the people tasked with keeping Sheffield moving

Everyday tens of thousands of people descend on Sheffield as part of their morning commute to the office, to meet friends for a coffee or to grab the latest must have item from the city’s hundreds of shops.

Everyday tens of thousands of people descend on Sheffield as part of their morning commute to the office, to meet friends for a coffee or to grab the latest must have item from the city’s hundreds of shops.

With that many people coming into the centre in cars, on foot, by bike or by public transport, managing the network could appear to be an impossible task. However, there is a dedicated team, based in the Town Hall, whose mission it is to try and keep Sheffield moving as much as possible.

Working out of the Urban Traffic Control Centre (UTCC), the team use a bank of monitor screens on the wall, and a few other tools to keep an eye on the busiest routes into and out of the city. They also can adjust things like traffic lights; matrix signs and other devices should queues be starting to form.

Cllr Ben Miskell stepped inside the UTCC to look for himself and learn about what goes on behind the scenes.
