Notice to leave from a landlord

Help and advice if you’ve been given notice to leave

Being asked to leave your home can be stressful, but you have legal rights as a tenant. Your landlord must follow the correct process. We can help you understand your options and check if the notice you’ve been given is valid.

If you’re a private tenant

Most private renters have assured shorthold tenancies. If you are being asked to leave, your landlord must follow the legal process.

What your landlord must do

As a first step your landlord must give you either:

  • a section 21 notice
  • a section 8 notice
