I want to help someone at risk of homelessness

If you’re worried about someone who is homeless or might lose their home, learn what steps you can take.

If you’re helping someone you know

Encourage them to contact Housing Solutions as soon as possible. This is the best way for them to get tailored support and advice.

You can also:

  • signpost them to local advice and support services through the Sheffield Directory, including help with housing, money, and wellbeing
  • help them gather documents they may need for a housing application (such as ID, proof of income and tenancy agreements)
  • Support them with benefit checks and maximising their income – tools like Turn2Us or EntitledTo can help identify extra support
  • assist with looking for housing online, such as using websites like Rightmove or SpareRoom, and help them understand how to contact landlords or agents
  • let them know about local emergency services – such as foodbanks, mental health support or welfare assistance

Even small practical steps can make a big difference. If you're not sure what to do, contacting Housing Solutions for advice.

If someone is sleeping rough

Sheffield has dedicated outreach teams who work directly with people who are sleeping rough – whether that’s on the streets, in cars, in tents, or in other unsafe or unsuitable places.

Not everyone sleeping rough is without accommodation. Some people may have somewhere to stay but are unable to access it, don’t feel safe there, or are experiencing other challenges. Outreach teams aim to understand each person’s situation and offer support accordingly.

They respond to information you provide and try to find and support individuals as quickly as possible.

Outreach teams can help people to:

  • find safe accommodation
  • claim benefits they’re entitled to
  • access healthcare, drug and alcohol support, or mental health services
  • reconnect with family or return to a home area, if that’s the right option

You can call 0800 066 5358 or contact Sheffield Street Outreach Team

You can also send an alert through StreetLink for anyone who is sleeping rough.

StreetLink alerts are sent to local outreach teams, who go out (mostly at night) to try and connect people sleeping rough with services.
