Make sure you are registered and that your details are correct. If your name, address or other details have changed you need to update your electoral registration.
Everyone is responsible for registering themselves. This is called Individual Electoral Registration (IER).
You need a few more details including your National Insurance (NI) number, these make it more secure. Your NI number is on your national insurance card, payslip, or letters about benefits or tax credits (find a lost National Insurance number).
Look out for a confirmation to say you’re registered.
The electoral register is used for elections, solving crime and checking credit.
The open register is an extract of the electoral register - it contains your name and address. The open register can bought by anyone or any organisation.
