Become a Shared Lives carer

Some adults in Sheffield need extra support to live well, and we provide trained carers for them.  Carers meet the specific needs of the adults they support in different ways.

About Shared Lives caring

Those who could use extra support may:

  • have a learning, physical or sensory disability
  • have mental health needs
  • be struggling to cope
  • want support with daily living skills
  • require support to access the community

The types of support provided include:

  • short notice respite – support for a limited amount of time at short notice, day or night
  • short break placements – support for a longer, planned period of time to give the usual carers a break
  • long term placements – support on a long term basis, with the person being supported becoming part of the household and family

Being a Shared Lives carer

Being a Shared Lives carer is a way of life - there’s no clocking on and off.

After the assessment process, we’ll match you with someone and you’ll get to know each other before the support is agreed.

You can support someone for a few hours a day, they could move in with you long term, or visit you for a short break, whichever you are interested in offering.

You’ll be paid a fixed amount, on a self-employed basis and benefit from preferential tax arrangements to share your life with one of Sheffield’s adults who need extra support to live well.
