The Housing Market Renewal programme in Sheffield is about much more than bricks and mortar. Culture has a vital role to play in creating vibrant communities in these areas – places where people want to live, work and play.
This initiative offers opportunities for the arts to be embedded within large-scale housing/community building programmes and to improve cultural provision in the places experiencing housing renewal and growth.
This programme of work will allow Arts Council England, Yorkshire and the wider arts community to work in direct partnership with us and the HMR Pathfinders in the planning and delivery of projects in the following ways.
Involving artists and cultural practitioners in the planning and design of new high-quality spaces will:
make the Sheffield HMR areas more desirable places to live
create a sense of local pride
make development more attractive to investors
These principles are currently being introduced into our work.
