Sell your property to us

If you are looking to sell your home, we might be interested in buying your property from you.

Over the next 5 years we are looking to deliver 1,000 new or replacement Council homes. This is known as the Stock Increase Programme.

Some of this target will be met through new build development, but the majority will be property acquisition.

The attached information sheet shows you how our acquisitions work is progressing.

The properties we purchase will be refurbished and then used as council housing, replenishing our housing stock and providing much-needed affordable housing in the city.

We currently have 2 main purchase schemes:

  • General Acquisitions: any property will be considered, as long as it meets the eligibility and affordability criteria explained below.

  • Long Term Empties: we have funding to purchase empty properties that have been empty for at least 6 months. These properties will also be subject to the affordability criteria below.



Generally we will consider properties across the city, as long as there is decent demand for them and where they are affordable to us. Our main focus is currently on former Council-owned properties.

The aim of the schemes are to provide more family housing across the city, so in general we are looking for houses with 2 bedrooms or more.

We are not prioritising flats, maisonettes or 1-bed properties.

We are also not considering flats in privately-owned blocks, or properties in areas where council stock has previously been transferred to a housing association.

We are also unable to consider properties that are occupied by tenants. We will only arrange inspection and valuation visits for properties that are either empty or occupied by the owner.



As a rough guide, we can afford up to:

  • £80,000 for 2-bed properties
  • £90,000 for 3-beds
  • £125,000 for 4-beds

These budget limits are inclusive of all fees and improvement costs.

We will assess the financial viability of each property on a case-by-case basis. We will consider the property value, the potential improvement costs (to bring the property up to a lettable standard) and the anticipated rental income.
