Snug is a partnership between us, Sheffield Hallam University, Hallam Students’ Union and The University of Sheffield.
Snug is a property inspection standard. The Snug badge is awarded when homes meet the required standard of property and tenancy management, and the landlord is considered ‘fit and proper’.
The scheme is promoted by us, and both universities, as the best way for students to make sure that their home and landlord are approved.
Property and management standards for the Snug scheme to monitor and regulate student housing in Sheffield
We know that the majority of student landlords in the city are professional, responsible and work in full cooperation with us. We think this deserves some recognition, so that students choosing a new home can distinguish between landlords who comply with their responsibilities – and those who possibly do not.
In time, we hope Snug will reduce, or even remove, the market opportunities for those landlords who aren’t willing to meet their obligations.
Any properties which landlords want to register and advertise through Sheffield Hallam University need to be Snug approved. Properties will not be advertised or promoted until they have been inspected.
Existing landlords registered with The University of Sheffield are working towards their properties being Snug. However, any new landlords wanting to register for the 2017-18 letting year and beyond must first get Snug approval.
Landlords should apply directly to us at email@example.com or call 0114 2734680. Just tell us that you’re interested in Snug, who you are and which properties you want to include. One of our inspecting Officers will then contact you to arrange the inspection.
Before applying, we ask that landlords have looked at the Snug standards and are comfortable that they are able to meet them.
When the inspection is complete, and the inspector is satisfied that the property and landlord meets the standard, a certificate is issued to display in the property and both universities are notified.
The Snug inspection lasts for 2 years.
Available properties are advertised on Studentpad. Studentpad is a simple, hassle free property search website used by both Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Sheffield.
As of 1 January 2017, we have revised some of our inspection fees.
There is an inspection fee of £50 per property. This increases to £100 for houses with 11 bedrooms or more.
Licensed Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) that meet the Snug standard are passported with no inspection fee. If we haven’t carried out an HMO inspection in the last few months, then we would need to re-inspect for Snug (but with no inspection fee).
For larger purpose built blocks:
There is an additional charge to advertise properties on the Sheffield Hallam University Studentpad website, and to register with The University of Sheffield. Both additional fees are payable directly to the relevant university.
Snug fees should be paid in advance of the inspection.
You can pay your inspection fee online by debit or credit card. Credit card payments incur a bank charge of 1.5%.
