Bins and recycling

How to dispose of waste if your household has coronavirus symptoms

  • place personal waste (face coverings and tissues) and cleaning cloths securely in a rubbish bag
  • place this bag in another rubbish bag, and tie securely
  • keep separate from other waste for 72 hours and then place in your black bin
  • do not take this waste to your local recycling centre


Births, deaths, marriages and citizenship

Ceremonies

  • from 12 April - legal limit of 15 attendees
  • no earlier than 17 May - legal limit of 30 attendees (if your ceremony is in the Town Hall, if social distancing measures and face coverings are still in place this number will remain at 15 attendees)
  • no earlier than 21 June - no legal limit on attendees (subject to the outcome of the Government's scientific Events Research Programme)
  • in all cases, the number allowed to attend includes the couple, witnesses and guests, but those working, such as registration officials and venue managers are not included.
  • please let us know if you would like to re-book for another date. Notices are valid for one year only but if fresh notices are required, these will be done free of charge for you
  • if you feel you may have exceptional circumstances please let us know. Each case will be judged on its own merit but evidence will be required
  • email the Register Office at ceremoniesteam@sheffield.gov.uk to reschedule a postponed ceremony or check on the current guidance for marriage/civil partnership

Funerals and cemeteries

  • cemeteries, halls of remembrance and columbaria are open for: 
    • - funerals or burials
    • - commemorative events celebrating the life of a person who has died
    • - a person to pay respects to a member of their household, a family member or friend
  • a maximum of 25 people can attend services in chapels
  • there are no restrictions to the number of mourners permitted at outdoor burial services, but all in attendance should observe social distancing and wear face coverings
  • can only take place in Covid-19 secure venues or in public outdoor spaces
  • mourners must observe social distancing guidance
  • crematoria and cemetery chapels are locked until the cortege arrives
  • hand sanitising stations are available in the crematoria and cemetery chapels
  • free live webcasting of services is available at City Road and Hutcliffe Wood Crematoria while mourner numbers are restricted. Ask your Funeral Director to arrange this for you
  • if you want to backfill the grave, mourners and funeral directors must follow social distancing guidance

Council Housing

The Council Housing Older People’s Independent Living (OPIL) Service

  • Neighbourhood Officers are in regular contact with tenants via telephone or intercom to provide information, advice and support
  • communal lounges and kitchens remain closed
  • laundry sites are open and available for tenants to use

Housing support

  • if you don’t feel safe where you currently live, contact South Yorkshire PoliceVAS or IDAS
  • if you have nowhere to live and cannot self-isolate, call 0114 273 6306 or 0800 7311 689 after 5pm

Private Housing Standards (private rented housing)

  • we’ll investigate and inspect emergencies about disrepair or illegal eviction where safe to do so
  • non-emergency inspections have resumed. Officers are reviewing open cases and will contact affected parties
  • private landlords must ensure properties meet required standards and keep up to date with government guidance and any changes to the law
  • we’ll roll forward any snug properties which are expiring until we can re-inspect. Contact the universities’ accommodation teams directly if you have questions about advertising with them

Licensing

  • our licensing depot is closed, office and telephone lines are closed until further notice
  • we are maintaining a limited service via email and online enquiry forms at www.sheffield.gov.uk/licensing
  • if you want to deliver documents by hand post them through the depot reception door
  • no public vehicles are permitted to access the depot


Parks, sport and recreation

All parks, green spaces and woodlands are open but parks buildings are closed. Some facilities are affected:

  • cafes and car parks are open (cafes for takeaway only)
  • playgrounds are open
  • outdoor gyms, parkour, skate parks, multi use games areas, basketball courts and tennis courts are closed
  • toilets are open at Graves Park Rose Garden, Millhouses Park, Endcliffe Park, Forge Dam, Rivelin Valley, Botanical Gardens, Norfolk Park Centre in the Park
  • Graves Park Animal Farm is open but you need to book ahead via our Eventbrite page
  • Botanical Gardens Bear Pit is open, Pavilions are closed
  • allotments are open
