Council Housing

We will carry out where safe to do so:

  • all emergency and urgent repairs
  • routine servicing of gas appliances

Until further notice: 

  • our housing offices are closed to the public
  • we've cancelled all planned repairs, appointments, and inspections. We'll contact anyone affected
  • if we need to see you in person, we will arrange a suitable appointment at a Council office
  • we ask you to access services online to ease pressure on our contact centre

Bins and recycling

  • we'll prioritise black bins and clinical waste if required

How to dispose of waste if your household has coronavirus symptoms

  • place personal waste (tissues) and cleaning cloths securely in a rubbish bag
  • place this bag in another rubbish bag, and tie securely
  • keep separate from other waste for 72 hours and then place in your black bin
  • you must not take this waste to your local recycling centre

Household waste recycling centres  

  • remain open for essential waste disposal only
  • introduced vehicle limits on site at any one time
  • reduced opening hours in place


Schools and childcare

  • Schools closed for most children on 20 March 2020 until further notice
  • we're working with schools to provide virtual learning
  • we're supporting families without access to the internet, or a computer
  • we're putting plans in place for children who get free school meals or extra support in school

Critical workers and emergency childcare

You can request emergency childcare if:

  • you are a critical worker, or have a vulnerable child
  • and, your child's school setting has closed

We will respond to your request within 48 hours.


Parking

  • you should only travel into Sheffield city centre if essential. eg key workers accessing their workplace.
  • we ask that everyone observes the current restrictions
  • keyworkers can park for free in all council off-street carparks, without a permit
  • we are no longer taking phone calls until further notice

Parks, sport and recreation

  • parks remain open until further notice
  • we urge you to follow social distancing guidance
  • gates to all playgrounds are locked
  • outdoor play and exercise facilities are closed until further notice
  • Botanical Gardens' pavillions are closed but the gardens are open


Roads and pavements

  • Our contractor, Amey, is prioritising critical services
  • Public and staff safety issues will be prioritised above all other jobs
  • If you have already received a notice of works for your road, original planned dates may now change

Information Rights Requests

  • new requests will be logged only
  • existing requests will be answered where possible  


Libraries and archives

  • all libraries and archives are closed to the public until further notice
  • we have extended return dates for books, and we will not fine anyone during this period
  • the online elibrary is still available.


Planning

  • we have suspended work on neighbourhood planning. This will be kept under review.
  • we cannot process planning history requests 
  • we cannot process any postal enquiries
  • send planning enquiries by email only to planningdc@sheffield.gov.uk.
  • email us about the processing of planning and building regulation applications
  • the normal procedures apply for reporting public safety or dangerous structures issues


Births, deaths, marriages and citizenship

General

  • only visit in person if you have a booked appointment
  • we are now only accepting card payments
  • you can book appointments online

Certificates

  • you can order certificates online, however:
  • we are currently only processing the £12 copy certificates until further notice
  • we no longer offer the £35 priority service until further notice

Ceremonies

  • all ceremonies for April and May 2020 have been put on hold
  • we will notify you directly with instructions
  • you must contact your venue 

Appointments

  • only one person is allowed to attend appointments - we will not allow anyone to wait in the office
  • we will notify you directly if your appointment is rescheduled
  • giving notice - all appointments are to be rescheduled. We will contact you
  • registration of death - ensure the person attending has all required documentation. 
  • birth - we currently have no appointments
  • registration of birth - only one parent will be allowed. We advise that you do not bring the baby if possible

 

Restrictions for funeral services

  • no more than 5 mourners may now attend funerals 
  • mourners must observe social distance guidance
  • burial of ashes, and scattering of ashes are temporarily suspended 
  • the halls of remembrance are closed until further notice

Those wishing to backfil the grave:

  • mourners and Funeral Directors must follow  social distancing guidance  
  • the Funeral Director or family must also bring their own spades


Travel and transport

Travel South Yorkshire continue to provide updates to travel services.


Elections

The UK Government has postponed the elections scheduled for 7 May 2020.


Council Cabinet meetings

Please do not attend cabinet meetings in person.

Cabinet Member attendance may be reduced to prioritise essential items of business, and to minimise exposure to Coronavirus.

  • submit questions via email and we'll respond/publish online


City events

We have cancelled or postponed all events scheduled to take place from now until the end of May.

  • keep our vital services running, even if they have to be delivered in different ways
  • continue to prioritise the most vulnerable people in the city
  • guarantee that no council tenants will lose their home 
  • work with the business community to help them access government support
  • support and mobilise the community to support each other through the crisis, working with the voluntary sector
