Culture and sport in Sheffield

Sheffield has a wealth of leisure facilities, activities, sports, culture and visitor attractions.

Sheffield has a thriving cultural and creative industries sector, accounting for 7.2% of Sheffield’s working population, almost double the national average.

Music

The music industry is particularly well represented and Sheffield has been the home of several well known bands and musicians.

Sheffield also has a number of local orchestras:

  • Hallam Sinfonia
  • Sheffield Symphony Orchestra
  • Sheffield Chamber Orchestra
  • Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra
  • City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra

The city is also home to a strong brass band tradition, male voice choirs and a thriving folk and traditional music community, with regular music sessions in many of the city’s pubs and bars.

Theatres

There are 2 major theatres in Sheffield:

  • Lyceum
  • Crucible
Sport

Sheffield is the first National City of Sport, with a range of high quality facilities originally built for the World Student Games in the city in 1991:

  • Sheffield Arena
  • Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, with its Olympic-sized pool and diving pool
  • English Institute of Sport, with an indoor running track and facilities and support for over 20 sports including athletics, diving, cycling, squash and boxing

The World Snooker Championships have been held in the city’s Crucible Theatre since 1977.

The world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC, has recently celebrated it’s 150th anniversary. The city also has two professional football clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.
