Who needs a skip permit

To place a builder's skip on a public highway in Sheffield you need to obtain a permit from us. You must be an authorised skip hire contractor to obtain permission to place a skip on the highway.

How much does it cost

A skip permit costs £15 for a maximum period of 15 days. There will be additional costs if you want to place a skip in a Pay and Display bay or where there are yellow lines.

Requests to place a skip on the public highway will not be accepted from the person(s) hiring the skip. The request must be made by the authorised skip operator.

How to apply for a permit

You will need to meet any conditions we ask you to meet. They may take into account:

  • where you want to place the skip
  • its size
  • how it is made visible to oncoming traffic
  • the care and disposal of its contents
  • if it will be lit at night, signed or guarded
  • how it will be removed at the end of the permission period

Your application must include the exact location for the skip and the dates when the permit is required (not exceeding 15 days). The location of the skip may need to be amended as part of the application process to prevent inconvenience to other parties. Skips are not usually allowed on footways or grass verges.

If you ask to place a skip on the highway where a traffic regulation order exists (ie single or double yellow lines) then we will have to carry out a further assessment of the proposed location before granting a permit. You will need to apply for special dispensation from our Parking Services Team.

If we give you permission the details will be recorded and you will be given a reference code for the skip and its location.

Keep within the law

We may pursue a prosecution against any skip hire contractor who places a skip on a road without an appropriate permit or places a skip that does not meet the Builders’ Skips Marking Regulations.
