The Moor

The Moor is the main post war shopping precinct in the city centre, and in recent years has often been seen as punching below its weight.

Work completed so far - Phase 1

We have been working in partnership with Scottish Widows Investment Property Partnership Trust (SWIPPT), part of Aberdeen Asset Management, to embark on an ambitious programme of regeneration which will transform this area into one of the most desirable shopping destinations in the city centre.

There has already been significant redevelopment with the completion of Moor Phase 1. This includes:

  • the Moor Market, which was completed just before Christmas 2013
  • several new shop units completed at the same time
  • a new multi-storey car park on Eyre Street. (This car park is known locally as the 'Kit-Kat' car park due to its design)

Paved area

The Moor has been upgraded with new granite paving, new street furniture, including stone benches with poems and public art carvings; and new lighting and trees.

The environment is now on par with the highly successful 'Gold Route' which travels east to west across the city centre. Indeed, The Moor represents the southern end of the 'Steel Route' (the north-south equivalent, eventually linking through to Castlegate/Wicker, via the Heart of the City and Peace Gardens in due course).

Shopping

The Atkinsons department store has had extensive improvements including the main entrance. The conversion of the vacant upper floors to student living accommodation has helped bring further vitality to the area and improved security in the evening.

The improved outdoor market stalls have raised the quality of the retail offer as well as the general environment and feel of the area.

Footfall

Increased activity on The Moor is evident through a significant increase in footfall. There is still work to be done and 4 major projects are still to be delivered.

Moor Phase 2

This site is located between The Moor, Rockingham Gate and Charter Row. It is anticipated that construction will be completed by the end of 2015 and will involve:

  • a new major retail store and other smaller retail units
  • a multi-screen cinema along with restaurants and bars
  • a pedestrian link from The Moor to Charter Square
  • 3 new kiosks on the upper section of the Moor to be constructed in 2014

SWIPPT are the developer on this phase.

Future development

Moor Phase 3

This site is the former McDonalds Restaurant and Adams retail store at the top of the Moor opposite Debenhams.

The proposed redevelopment includes one major and 2 smaller retail units. SWIPPT are currently working to secure appropriate retailers. This would start on site once Phase 2 is under way.

Moor Phase 4

Phase 4 is for the refurbishment of the block adjoining Earl Street and The Moor across from the market main entrance.

Planning consent has been granted to provide 2 new retail units and an enhanced appearance to this block.

Moor Phase 5

This is the final phase of the Moor. It would cover the area from Cumberland Street, up to and through the Moorfoot tunnel to St Mary's Gate. (The tunnel does not currently have public access).

Further developments

Further developments may come forward as the property market and attractiveness of The Moor improves.

An ambitious scheme of improvements at Charter Square is planned to further integrate The Moor with the New Retail Quarter for example.

In addition to this there remain some vacant units on The Moor as well as the side streets.

There is a healthy interest from the property market and it is anticipated these will be filled with a combination of retail and leisure uses.
