Our Access Officer for disabled people provides advice on all aspects of physical access for disabled people to the city's environment to ensure compliance with the Disability Equality Act 2010.

Advice we provide

  • development proposals (eg planning, building regulation and licensing applications)
  • access to public buildings
  • general access advice throughout the city

Other work includes preparation of policies and design guidance on access, for example our Access Policies and the Disability Design Standards.

Access Liaison Group

We also facilitate the Access Liaison Group, a group, which ensures that disabled people can have a fair input on changes across the city.

New members are always welcome so please contact us if you wish to get involved.

Design guidance

We produce a range of design guidance. It has been prepared with the aim of being of assistance to not only environmental professionals, such as architects, but also businesses, community groups or individuals wishing to ensure their buildings are fully accessible to disabled people.

A series of separate sheets that cover the key access standards ranging from car parking to ramps, means of escape to cash machines, as well as the design of reception areas and the types of communication systems that buildings might use.

A range of contacts for disability organisations and specialist sources of advice are available by contacting the Access Officer.
