We have a wide range of events taking place at our libraries.

Reading groups

A reading group or book club is a group of people who regularly meet to discuss a book they have all read.  Groups are a fun and social way of sharing your passion for books and discovering great writing you might not otherwise read.

If you're interested in starting your own reading group at home or in the workplace, you can borrow 10 book sets from one of our libraries to begin one. We have a wide range of titles from classic literature to thrillers, sci-fi and biographies.  We also keep sets aimed at groups of young people, emergent readers and ESOL classes.

Coffee mornings, craft groups and other social activities

We offer a wide range of social activities that are free for members. If you want to learn new skills or just chat with people in your area about things that interest you, these groups are a great opportunity to get out in your community.

Computer classes - regular sessions for beginners

We have beginner computer classes taking place across our Sheffield libraries. We can help you learn how to use your computer and the internet, whether you want to shop and socialise online or you need to learn some skills for your job.

Sporting Memories Groups

Groups for men aged over 50 who love talking about sport

Whether it is cricket, rugby, football, boxing, snooker or athletics, share your sporting memories with other sports fans over old photographs, newspaper articles and memorabilia.  These relaxed. Informative, friendly and free groups meet at various libraries across Sheffield.

Shared Reading Groups

We are delighted to be involved in a new project working with the Reader Organisation to bring Shared Reading to Sheffield. A network of weekly Shared Reading groups is now springing up across the City.

Shared Reading is a way of accessing great literature in an informal and fun environment. A story or poem is read aloud to the group. Then we stop and talk about what we have read and discuss our thoughts and feelings over a drink and some cake. The groups are open to adults of all ages and abilities and are free to attend.

Please email Sue.taylor2@sheffield.gov.uk if you would be interested in taking part in a group and discovering the joy of reading together.

Board gaming

Join in at a relaxed and social session of board gaming. We now host regular sessions at several libraries across Sheffield. Whether you're an experienced player or completely new to board games, we'll have a friendly gamebrarian on hand to get you started.

Also check out the Sheffield Board Game Library.  We hold a collection of games in the Central Library Reading Room and a more family friendly collection in the Central Children’s Library.  Both collections are free to use in the library during normal opening hours.
