Employee benefits

If you work for us, we aim to equip and support you so that you are skilled, healthy and motivated at work, can perform well and provide an excellent service to people in Sheffield.

Your work-life balance: flexible working and annual leave

We have a wide range of flexible working options. The type of options available will vary depending on the individual job role and there will be some roles, where we can offer more flexibility than others. You are welcome to discuss options at interview.

For some roles, we’re adopting a hybrid way of working, with time at home and in the workplace, to meet the needs of our customers and for better team working. In addition, we have family friendly policies, where there could be flexibility around the hours you work. For some roles, you could work part time/job share or work term times only.

When you start with us, if you work full time, you will be entitled to 26 days holidays, rising to 31 days after five years, plus bank holidays. If you are part-time, your entitlement is a proportion of this. Depending on your role, you could also access an annual scheme to purchase additional annual leave, temporarily reduce hours or take a career break.

Wellbeing and Involvement

To support you with any emotional, financial or legal matters, you can use our employee assistance programme, which provide a free and completely confidential life management and personal support service.

In addition to working in a supportive environment, you’ll have the chance to get involved in employee events and groups to help improve our services to Sheffield people.

Financial rewards

As an employee, you can join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), Teachers' Pension Scheme or NHS Pension Scheme depending on your employment status. This is a valuable part of your pay and reward package.

As a member of our pension scheme, you have a flexible and tax efficient way of a decent pension to look forward to in retirement. You also get tax relief on any earnings that you pay into your pension.

It is easy to make your contribution, as we can make a regular deduction from your monthly salary. On average, our employees pay 6.5% of their salary into the pension scheme each month and the remainder is paid by us. The amount will vary, but generally we will contribute two thirds of the scheme's costs and you contribute one third.

To help reduce your travel to work costs, you can save on the cost of a new bike and/or cycling equipment through our Cycle scheme which enables you to get a tax-free bike and pay for it by monthly deductions from your salary.

Sheffield City Council has also teamed up with Westfield Health Scheme to offer you a reduced rate for private health cover. Westfield Health provide an allowance towards the cost of your dental and optical treatment, physiotherapy and other treatments.

You can also access our special offers/discounts with retailers, gyms, Vodaphone and Northern rail and other transport providers.
