The city is proud of its rich variety of urban parks, woodland, countryside and other green spaces; they are extremely popular destinations, attracting over 25 million visits each year.  We’ve estimated there are around 4.5 million trees in the city, that’s approximately 7 trees for each resident; and we are custodians of 2.7m of these trees.   Our commitment to the highest quality standards is endorsed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, with 13 Green Flags awarded to parks across the city.

Primarily, this role is about leadership and innovation.  You will lead and manage our Parks & Countryside team, a diverse range of highly regarded, public-facing services for the city of Sheffield; ranging from bereavement and coronial services; allotments and ecology; new projects and public realm; through to the management of some of the region’s most well known and loved parks and recreational areas. You will also be responsible for harnessing our Better Parks and 5 year business strategy. This is a busy and diverse role that will be demanding, yet highly rewarding, as no one day will be the same.

We are seeking an experienced leader to drive forward the Parks & Countryside services on their improvement journey and build on the success we have achieved to date. If successful you will play a pivotal role in supporting the PLACE Leadership team in delivering services for people who live, work and visit Sheffield. We are relentlessly driving cultural change across the service, constantly looking for opportunities to innovate, learn, improve and grow. You will help us make a real difference. 

You will have exceptional partnership-building capabilities, underpinned by the ability to get things done. You will be an inclusive and authentic leader and will have previously led customer service or operational services to achieve excellence and through successful transformational change.  You don’t need to have experience of working in Parks or Countryside; but we’ll expect you’ll love the outdoors and our City as much as we do.   

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities, which benefit you and the Council
