Sheffield Botanical is one of Sheffield’s premier Gardens, originally opened in 1836 the nineteen acre estate was fully restored in 2005to include pavilion glasshouses which house temperate plants from around the world. The Garden also includes a varied range of planting, formal areas, woodlands and a new ‘educational’ building opened in 2017.

The Head Gardener will undertake a ‘hands on’ gardening role working and leading a small team of Gardeners undertaking all aspects of horticultural duties to maintain and develop the gardens and have the ability and experience to lead a large number of volunteers.

The successful applicant will have a comprehensive knowledge of horticulture and the ability to undertake all aspects of grounds maintenance on site. On occasion there may be the need to work and lead a team of staff in other green spaces within the city.

The successful candidate will be:

  • Driven and self-motivated with the ability to work unsupervised
  • Able to lead, manage and work alongside gardeners and volunteers
  • Have horticultural experience of working in a public park or garden and competent in utilising resources and machinery, planning and deadlines
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a similar environment
  • Able to assist with the development and implement garden design changes
  • Be an effective communicator able to communicate volunteers
  • A flexible approach as there is a need to work  occasional evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays to cover ‘events’ and ensure service delivery
