Waste & recycling performance

In Sheffield we provide a wide range of waste and recycling services. These services contribute to our vision which is to 'Reduce the environmental impact of Sheffield's waste and to exceed expectations of our customers'.

Our key objectives to achieve this overall vision are:

Waste Contract Review update

On Wednesday 18 January, Cabinet approved changes to the future delivery of waste services in the City.

Cabinet gave approval to re-procure our waste services currently provided by Veolia, with a view to securing a new and improved service arrangement. Cabinet also approved changes to waste policies to realise service efficiencies and improvements.

For a number of years, we have been working with Veolia to try and reduce the cost of the waste contract through delivering efficiencies and cost savings. Whilst we are still willing to negotiate savings with Veolia, the existing contract is no longer financially sustainable hence the decision to re-procure our waste services.

The service changes that have been approved include, amongst others, the replacement of the current blue box with an additional recycling container, changes to collection times, and the introduction of charges for new and replacement black bins and green bins.

Having now gained Cabinet approval, a significant new re-procurement programme will begin which we expect to take over a year. Further updates will be provided as this programme develops. In the meantime our contract with Veolia will continue and they will continue to deliver services, including the collection of black bins, blue bins and boxes on our behalf.
