How to reduce your waste

As well as reducing the amount of waste you put in your black bin by using your blue and brown recycling bins, there are lots of other ways you can reduce the amount of waste produced by your household.

Home composting

Did you know that up to 60% of your household rubbish could be composted?

Home composting transforms your kitchen and garden waste, including leaves, flowers, cuttings egg shells, tea bags, and lots more into a nutrient rich food for your garden. It's easy to make and use. All you need to get started is a compost bin and some outdoor space.

You can purchase a compost bin or you can pick one up from most good hardware stores and garden centres.

Love food hate waste

Did you know that In the UK we throw away 6.5 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes every year, 4.5 million tonnes of which was edible!  Not only is wasting food bad for the environment, it also costs the average household around £50 a month - that's £600 a year!

There are many reasons why the food we buy is wasted and doesn't get eaten - buying too much food, preparing too much, incorrect storage and food going out of date before it is used.
