Parenting Matters - Sheffield Parenting Strategy

Parents and the home environment are the single most important factor in shaping their children’s well-being, achievements and prospects.

It is not unusual for parents to feel that they may need advice and support in their parenting role. They also may be unaware of the services that already exist or have difficulty in accessing them.

Working alongside our partner organisations, we intend to increase parenting skills and capacity, helping parents and carers to be better informed about the services that are on offer to support them.

Parenting Support

In Sheffield, we offer a range of parenting support covering all age ranges, from parenting programmes for newborns through to programmes for parenting teenagers. We also provide programmes for parents of children with specific and complex needs.

All of our programmes are evidenced based with the majority taking place in groups. If you would like to attend a programme, or are a professional who would like to refer someone onto a programme, please contact us.

Positive Parenting Tip Sheets

The parenting team has produced some parenting tip sheets that include advice on everything from communicating with your baby or teenager to learning how to praise and promote development.

Parenting Matters

Our vision is that every parent in Sheffield is confident, skilled and resilient. Parents will be able to understand and enjoy their child and deal with the unique challenges of the parenting experience.

Delivering this vision will ultimately improve outcomes for children and families. Specifically this will lead to:

  • Better social and emotional development in children;
  • Better and more attuned parent-child relationships;
  • Reduced abuse and neglect;
  • Improved educational attainment and increased aspirations;
  • Healthier and happier children;
  • Reduced aggression, crime and antisocial behaviour into adulthood;
  • Confident, skilled and resilient parents of the future.

Parenting Matters 2013-2013, Sheffield's refreshed parenting strategy is aimed at commissioners, services and practitioners who are involved in work with parents and families. The strategy outlines how we and our partners can work together to achieve these outcomes.
