School Admissions

Changes to the school admissions will result in more choice for parents about the right time for their child to start school.

  • All children will have the option to start school from the September after their fourth birthday.
  • Parents/carers will have greater flexibility about choosing when their 4 year old starts primary school reception class.
  • Parents/carers can continue to access a free place in a nursery or other early learning setting (up to 15 hours per week term time), if they choose for their child to start in January or April.

  • All four year old children can start in reception class in a primary school in the September after their fourth birthday.
  • Parents/carers may choose to defer their child's admission into reception class until January or April, depending on their child's date of birth
  • If you choose to defer, you continue to be entitled to free early learning (15 hours per week term time) in an early years setting of your choice
  • Compulsory school starting age remains the same - children must start school the term after their fifth birthday.
