Free school meals and paid for school meals. School meals are a great way of giving your child the opportunity to:

  • enjoy a nutritionally balanced and healthy meal
  • eat with their friends
  • learn about how to socialize together in the dining room
  • try a wide variety of foods
  • learn how to make choices

There are 2 types of free school meals:

  • Income related free school meals
  • Infant free school meals


Income related free school meals

You may be eligible for free school meals at Sheffield schools, and nurseries run by ourselves.

If you live in Sheffield and receive any of the following benefits you can claim free school meals for your:

  • school-aged child
  • nursery-aged child, if they attend before and after lunch sessions at a nursery school or nursery class run by ourselves

You can also claim free milk for your primary school aged child up to the end of Year 6.

Qualifying benefits

  • Income Support
  • Income based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income related Employment Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit - as long as you have a yearly household income of less than £16,190 (as assessed by HM Revenue and Customs) and do not get Working Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

Over 18 and at school

If you are over 18 and still attend school, you can claim for free school meals if you receive any of the first 3 benefits listed above.


Free infant school meals, milk and school funding

If your child attends a state funded infant school and is in reception class, year 1 or year 2 (key stage 1) they are entitled to "universal infant free school meals" regardless of your income.

This could save you almost £400 a year for each child you have in key stage 1.

Contact your child’s school to tell them you want to take up the offer of "universal infant free school meals".

Parents of infants who receive the above qualifying benefits

Apply for free school meals if you think you might be entitled, because your school gets up to £1,320 additional funding (Pupil Premium) to support your child's education and can help to buy new equipment and resources.

But this money is only paid if you apply for free school meals and are confirmed to be entitled.

Or telephone us (select Option 4 and then Option 3).

Either way, you'll need:

  • Your National Insurance Number (or NASS number)
  • Names of your child(ren)
  • Their dates of birth

Next steps after you've applied

If your claim is successful the school will be notified that your child can have free school meals.

Schools will ensure that this information is treated with the strictest confidence and handled sensitively.


Change of circumstances

Contact us if your circumstances change.

For example, if you no longer receive benefits, move house or change school, as this may affect your right to claim.

Catering at your child’s school

The main catering contractor in Sheffield is Taylor Shaw, this contract runs until 2016.

50 schools in Sheffield work under different arrangements:

  • 15 are part of a Private Finance Initiative contract arrangement
  • 2 schools manage a private contract themselves, and the contractor employs the staff directly
  • 24 Academies manage their own catering
  • the rest of the schools manage the meal service themselves and employ the catering team in school
